„Yesterday is History Tomorrow a Mystery
Today a Gift“ Eleanor Roosevelt)
In April last year, we reported on Martin’s cycle tour across America and the presentation of his pictures of the trip, exhibited in the premises of Dr Sörensen’s veterinary practice. The net proceeds from the sale of the pictures were donated to our organisation.
Martin’s activities are entering the next round. He has written a book that captures the impressions of his fascinating cycle tour through the USA.
Anyone planning something similar should read it. It’s the closest you’ll get to travelling by bike. Unless you get on the saddle yourself.
With lively words, personal stories and down-to-earth humour, he takes us on an adventurous journey through the diversity of America. Of course, he talks about the endless expanses of the prairies, the picturesque lake landscapes and Yellowstone National Park. But he also talks about the disarming helpfulness and joie de vivre of the people, which more than anything else characterised his journey. The reader learns extremely interesting details about the history of America, interesting facts about religion, astonishing facts about geography and names that are also familiar in Germany, such as Woodstock, Kellog’s and Buffalo Bill, as well as American presidents whose paths he crossed. Cineastes in particular will get their money’s worth with reports on places associated with “The Godfather”, “The Big Lebowski” or “Gilbert Grape”.
However, it is not only his words that captivate us, but also his photographs. They reflect life in America and its diverse everyday situations. Through his eyes, the everyday becomes something special. His snapshots not only capture moments, but also tell entire stories of encounters, emotions and the diversity of American life. Of course, there are also impressive shots of the American landscape. All the pictures were taken with his smartphone, which gives them an immediate and authentic quality.
Last but not least, it is also a journey to himself that he undertakes: Embedded in a narrative framework in which he talks about his illness and therapy with shocking candour, and also embedded in touching words and pictures of his children Oscar and Lucie, the bike tour becomes a lesson in serenity and positive thinking for him and for the reader. Or, as the last sentence of the book puts it, the experience that “you can avoid many a cliff in life with a smile”.
So follow Martin on his journey, find out what 20-K coffee is all about, why Tribulus terrestris is dangerous for cyclists, what Coxsackie is all about, why dogs in Ontario are at increased risk of lung cancer and what makes the Salt River Pass at over 2,300 metres above sea level a most remarkable place.
